After the loss of our daughter, Madelynn, we felt as if we were drowning. Getting caught in the storm of grief searching for some kind of meaning as to “WHY.” Glenn and I felt, just because she died, didn’t mean our need to parent died too. We felt we needed a way to alleviate some of this pain and the only way we felt any bit of relief was to make purpose. We parented our daughter the past 15 years, in ways of helping others in need through volunteering with other organizations and developing our very own Madelynn inspired 501c3 non profit called, Reflections Grief & Wellness Care.
After Maddy died, we noticed that a certain butterfly would make her appearance to myself and our family. This was always a magical moment, and these moments always came at the right time. We decided one of her signs was a butterfly and for her first birthday, we hosted a butterfly release. Each year we did the same and when friends and family heard about this, they started to gather. Some would bring food, others a gift in memory of Maddy and these magical moments started to grow.
When we moved, our ritual for her birthday seemed to go away. Which meant that this magical moment for her birthday went away too. Last year, in 2023, I decided to bring it back, I simply sat on my front porch and started to release butterflies. The children in the neighborhood were so happy, and mesmerized with these beautiful creatures. They would hold the butterflies so gently, and watch as they flit from flower to flower. The air, was calm, there was laughter, and for my husband and I it was very nostalgic.
We decided last May, that this would be a program, and maybe just maybe our purpose for this program is to activate hope in the lives of children as they experience Maddy’s birthday party. There is beauty in the transformation, and there is no shame in parenting your child who died. Our hope is that today, you will find peace in the quiet reflection, a shared love and togetherness, and a reminder that even in the face of profound loss, love, and compassion could create something beautiful.

The “Reflection Be the Light” walk carries a profound symbolism, signifying the light of our children, our loved ones, illuminates the path from HOPE to HEALING after loss. Team captains, who are present at the event, will be honored with personalized lanterns, while they lead their teams through the early dusk hours. We invite you to be a part of this meaningful event.
The Reflections Butterfly Party is a heartwarming family friendly event, providing space for families to come together and celebrate their loved ones. Participants, upon registration, are invited to engage in “butterfly“ crafts, enjoy light refreshments, and participate in a beautiful closing ceremony featuring a live butterfly release, and for those who would like to enhance their experience, additional butterflies are available for $10 each.
Join us in creating lasting memories and meaningful moments as we hold space for reflection.
